  • [es-pree de less-ka/-iay] (idiom) A witty remark that occurs to you too late, literally on the way down the stairs. The Oxford Dictionary of Quotations defines esprit de l'escalier as, "An untranslatable phrase, the meaning of which is that one only thinks on one's way downstairs of the smart retort one might have made in the drawing room."

Claire, he is such a cutie! How could you ever stay mad at that little guy...I mean he even ate my new sweater and I still like him! Is it getting any warmer in Chicago?

Yes, he'll have a new attitude come March...

he is so cute. you should definitely post a fuzzy-belly picture. it's kinda like cat porn. except less creepy.

Oh my, is he adorable!

The vet assistant said he might get more affectionate, but he's pretty affectionate as it is.

Quick side story. Last night in one of my classes we had to share these web pages we've been working on. (Mine is still not quite up yet.) Anyhow, I was walking the class through my pages and someone asked about the navigation link "Blog," was I planning on having a blog page, etc? I said it went to my typepad blog and clicked on it. There was Frankie's face and I laughed embarassingly, because here I was, a blogging punchline, with a picture of my cat front and center. I turned a bit red and quickly closed the page.
